Inspired by reading and loving Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry, Kelly Cosby visited Chincoteague with her sisters, took photos of the wild, swimming ponies, and has essentially adopted the island as a second home.
I met Kelly when she had a vendor booth selling her stunning horse photos and I was part of a vendor booth selling my Marguerite Henry biography, Marguerite, Misty and Me. We had an instant Chincoteague Pony and Misty and Marguerite Henry connection!
Kelly is able to take photos of the ponies by way of a boat. If you haven't been, but want to see the Chincoteague Ponies with your own eyes, I highly recommend reserving your spot on a boat or kayak.
Fun story: last year for the Monday morning northern herd beach walk, friends and I were on the beach on Assateague. I noticed a boat with a prime spot to see the herd, like a giant trail ride, but clustered closer together step along the Atlantic shore. Next to the boat I saw a ginormous gray fin. I watched it and it did not have the movement of a dolphin--I pointed it out to the people I was with, "I think that's a shark!" They agreed.
That was last July. Now flash forward to April of this year--I met Kelly and she said she was taking picture on a boat and I said, "I saw a boat and there was what looked like a huge shark next to it."
"Yes! That was the boat I was on," Kelly said. lol
